Algeria is currently planning to build 6,000 megawatts of solar-thermal electricity generating capacity for export to Europe via cable across the Mediterranean Sea. Algeria's vast desert reportedly receives enough harnessable solar energy to power the entire world economy.

Paper accounts for more than 25 percent of all landfill waste. Over a lifetime, the average American uses approximately 27 tons of paper. Recycling half of that total would save 221 trees, 91,000 gallons of water and 1,027 gallons of oil – all used in the production of new paper.

QUOTABLE:

We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time... The 'tide in the affairs of men' does not remain at the flood; it ebbs. We may cry out desperately for time to pause in her passage, but time is deaf to every plea and rushes on. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residue of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: 'Too late.'
– Martin Luther King Jr., 1967

Michael Ruppert to Deliver Sunday Keynote at 2010 EarthWorks Expo

The world is running short of energy, especially cheap, easy-to-find oil. Shortages, along with resulting price increases, threaten industrialized civilization, the global economy, and our entire way of life.

Growing numbers of experts are issuing such warnings, but few do so with greater knowledge, passion or urgency than Michael C. Ruppert.

In what promises to be a riveting keynote address, Michael C. Ruppert, author of Confronting Collapse, will detail the intricate connections between money and energy, including the ways in which oil shortages and price spikes triggered the economic crash that began in September 2008. Given the inescapable correlation between economic growth and energy use, Ruppert argues that we are not, in fact, on the verge of economic recovery, but instead in real danger of collapse.

But there is still hope. Ruppert outlines a comprehensive plan of action, including the creation of a second strategic petroleum reserve for the use of state and local governments, the immediate implementation of a national Feed-in Tariff mandating that electric utilities pay 3 percent above market rates for all surplus electricity generated from renewable sources, and an emergency program for soil restoration and sustainable agriculture.

Michael C. Ruppert is a former Los Angeles police officer turned investigative journalist. He is the author of Crossing the Rubicon (2004), A Presidential Energy Policy (2009), and most recently, Confronting Collapse: The Crisis of Energy and Money in a Post Peak Oil World – A 25-Point Program for Action (2010). He founded the influential website "From the Wilderness" in 1998 and stars in the new documentary film Collapse, currently screening in select theaters nationwide. He lives in Los Angeles.

In the words of peak oil expert Richard Heinberg, "Mike Ruppert has an unblemished track record for saying things that are incendiary, outrageous, shocking – and true. Our new president needs desperately to hear [his] message... and so do the rest of us."

Michael C. Ruppert will speak at EarthWorks Expo on Sunday, May 23, starting at 12:30 pm. His appearance is co-sponsored by Chelsea Green Publishing.

Colorado Governor's Energy Office To Offer New Rebates for Efficiency and Renewable Energy
Thanks to Boulder Green Building Guild newsletter

Beginning in March 2010, the Colorado Governor's Energy Office (GEO) will begin offering new rebates and incentives for Colorado residents and businesses that install energy efficiency and renewable energy measures in their home or business. Funding for these rebates is provided by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. These rebates will:
  • Increase consumer awareness and access to energy efficiency services and renewable energy technologies.
  • Help Coloradans save money on their utility bills and stabilize their energy costs.
  • Stimulate Colorado's economy.
  • Foster sustainable energy efficiency and renewable energy industries that provide quality, local jobs.

Obama Quietly Reverses Bush on Environment; Press Barely Notices

According to a January 11 op-ed by Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope, "Perhaps the greatest untold story of the past year is the reversal of George Bush's eight years of environmental counterrevolution. When Bush and Cheney stopped a century-long tradition of environmental progress, the media was flabbergasted by the unrelenting intensity of the assault. But the Obama reversal has been largely unheralded (in fact, virtually unnoticed), even though it has arguably been even more intense." See the full story HERE.

UK Plans 25 GW of Offshore Windpower By 2020
Thanks to David Schaller, Sustainable Practices newsletter

The British government has announced plans to develop at least 25 gigawatts of offshore wind generating capacity by 2020. The vast project, costing some £75bn,  could create 70,000 new jobs and will produce as much electricity as 25 large coal-fired powerplants, helping the UK meet its goal of deriving at least 15% of the nation's energy from renewable sources by 2020. The initiative will require the installation of 6,400 turbines over the decade. The UK has more wind resources than any other nation in Europe and, according to Greenpeace, already leads the world in offshore windpower, with some 700MW installed. See full story HERE.
